UK: European Commission (EC) challenges UK ‘traffic light’ front-of pack labelling system

09 September 2014

EU Member states have complained about UK’s voluntary front-of-pack ‘traffic light’ nutrition labelling scheme, arguing that it might cause an illegal bar to international trade for regional products such as hams and cheeses. The EC will investigate the matter and dependent on the outcome may take formal steps to block the scheme.
The voluntary labelling system has been introduced 2013 in the UK, aiming at a clear information transfer to consumers on amounts of fat, salt and sugar and the percentage of contribution to recommended daily intakes. The UK counters that the EU legislation allows individual countries to implement voluntary labelling schemes (News Release IFSIP, 1 July 2014).
