US: Packaging priority in EPA plan for sustainable materials

23 November 2015

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released a Sustainable Materials Management (SMM) Plan for 2017 through 2022. The SSM Plan has 3 main strategic priorities, one of which is packaging. The plan aims to increase the quantity and quality of packaging materials recovered from municipal solid waste and develop critically important collection and processing infrastructures.
The SSM Plan is a roadmap for the EPA’s SMM Program, which has 4 objectives. Two of the objectives are to decrease the nation’s waste disposal rate through source reduction, waste prevention & reuse, and recycling and to reduce the environmental impacts of materials (State Recycling Laws Update, 16 November 2015).
