Packaging made from squid, fish and algae waste

08 November 2016

Researchers at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) in Spain are using squid, fish and algae waste to obtain biodegradable/compostable products. The researchers are designing active containers that prolong the life of food and, at the same time, contribute towards reducing the amount of food discarded.
The researchers produced transparent films for food packaging that can be heat sealed and have excellent properties as a barrier for gases and fatty products. Furthermore, the films were subjected to biodegradation processes with good results. An article about the research is published in the ACS Sustainable Chemistry and Engineering journal (News Item UPV/EHU, 29 September 2016).
