Safety assessments of two substances for use in active FCM

30 May 2016

The EFSA Panel on Food Contact Materials, Enzymes, Flavourings and Processing Aids (CEF Panel) has assessed the active substances ‘polyacrylic acid, sodium salt, cross-linked’ and ‘potassium metabisulfite’ for the use in active food contact materials.
The CEF Panel concluded that the use of polyacrylic acid, sodium salt, cross-linked, does not raise a safety concern when used in absorbent pads in the packaging of fresh or frozen meat, poultry, fish, fruits and vegetables, and that the substance potassium metabisulfite would not be a safety concern for the consumer if used as precursors for the release of sulfur dioxide to wine under the considered conditions (EFSA Journal, 13 May 2016).
