USA: DEP proposes adding several metals and formaldehyde to Maine’s Chemicals Of High Concern List

On November 27, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) issued public notices for four draft rules that place potentially harmful substances - formaldehyde, cadmium, mercury and arsenic - used in making children’s products on the state “priority list” of chemicals.
Nearly 50 substances are currently on Maine’s priority list. Children’s products containing priority chemicals could later be banned from manufacture and sale/distribution in the state. Alternately, manufacturers may substitute a safer chemical. Manufacturers of children’s products would need to comply with the notification requirement within 180 days of rule adoption (State Recycling Laws Update, 5 December 2013).
