US: Container deposit scheme proposed in Indiana

02 February 2015

Bill SB 142A has been introduced in the Indiana General Assembly to establish a container deposit scheme in Indiana. If approved, the law would take effect on July 1, 2015. A number of beverages packaged in metal, glass, or plastic containers having volumes of one gallon or less would be subject to the 10-cent deposit.
The retail sale of covered beverages in nonreturnable containers would be prohibited. All covered beverage containers would need to be embossed, stamped or labeled with the 10-cent deposit value and IN or Indiana. Effective March 1, 2017, covered beverage producers and distributors would need to file annual reports (State Recycling Laws Update, 9 January 2015).
