US: Support for California statewide single-use plastic bag ban

27 September 2016

Reaffirming its position prior to the November vote on California Proposition 67 on the statewide single-use plastic bag ban approved by the California State Legislature in 2015, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors has unanimously voiced support for the ban. The support took the form of a resolution that carries no legal weight, but it sends a message.
Last year, California became the first US state to ban single-use plastic bags with the passage of SB 270. The ban was supposed to take effect on July 1, 2015, but implementation was delayed by a successful industry-supported petition drive, that put Proposition 67 on the November 2016 ballot (Recycling Laws Update, 12 September 2016).
