US Senator: investigate phthalates in fast food packaging

31 August 2017

On July 30, United States Senator Charles Schumer (Democrat - New York) sent a letter to the US Food and Drug Administration to investigate phthalates in food contact materials, particularly plastics used in fast food packaging.
"To think that we have all this data on phthalate chemicals from doctors, scientists, health experts and other industries just sitting around, frozen like a beef patty and begging for the FDA to take it to the next appropriate level of scrutiny is worrisome for the consumer," said Senator Schumer. "The studies are clear: the link between these chemicals does have an impact on the body, and not a very good one” (State Recycling Laws Update, 7 August 2017).
