US: Maryland container deposit scheme in the make
In 2015 a bill was introduced in Maryland to establish a state container deposit scheme. This bill failed to advance beyond the Committee on Environment and Transportation and Economic Matters. On 8 February 2016 a new bill – HB 862 – was introduced which is very similar. A companion bill – SB 367 – was introduced on January 28.
Both bills would place a five-cent deposit on beverage containers made of glass, aluminum or plastic and containing between 7 and 101 fluid ounces. Beginning on 1 July 2017, covered beverage containers would need to indicate the deposit, display “Maryland” or “MD,” and bear a universal product code (State Recycling Laws Update, 15 February 2016).
