Testing child resistance of reclosable packaging - draft standard published
In April 2014 draft standard ISO/DIS 8317 was published, revising the second edition of 2003. The standard specifies the requirements and test methods for reclosable packages designated as resistant to opening by children. Acceptance criteria are given for the packages when tested by specified methods. These methods not only provide a measure of the effectiveness of the packaging in restricting access by children, but also cover the accessibility to the contents by adults.
Testing is carried out with two panels of people: a test with young children 42-51 months, inclusive and a test with adults 50-70 years old, inclusive (World Packaging Standardisation Newsletter, July 2014).
