Seychelles proposes to ban certain plastic packaging
The WTO has recently circulated a notification announcing two draft regulations from the Seychelles under the Environment Protection Act, 2016. The regulations would prohibit plastic utensils, polystyrene boxes and certain plastic bags as well as require biodegradable forms of these products to conform to prescribed standards. The proposed date of entry into force for both proposals is August 2017.
The first regulation concerns restriction on manufacturing, importation and distribution of plastic bags. The second regulation concerns restriction on importation, distribution and sale of plastic utensils and polystyrene boxes (News Item SGS, 17 February 2017).
