Thesis: Performance measurement packaging lines at Heineken
For his thesis at the Open Universiteit, G.J.A.P. Nollen investigated how effective performance measurement of packaging lines can be optimized for fast and reliable root cause detection. The study was conducted at the bottling facility of Heineken Brewery Zoeterwoude.
A packaging line for bottling beverages consists of several machines. Within this research a model-based diagnosis algorithm is developed that uses material balances to model the conveyors, but is based on linear equations like the ‘overall throughput effectiveness’ metric developed by Muthiah. These type of calculations are easier to apply and operate, while propagations of starvations and blockages are still taken into account.
