Retail and e-commerce – November 2024
Developments in e-commerce
RetailX has published a report about the Benelux e-commerce market with consumer insights and market dynamics. The report investigates trends that shape online and omnichannel retailing in the region. The e-commerce market is growing, much of it cross-border, as consumers shop easily between the three countries as well as from their neighbours and elsewhere. The Netherlands is the largest market with a mature online ecosystem while Luxembourg leads the way in cross-border online sales. You can download the report, and other country reports including the Nordics, Germany, France and the UK after filling in your details.
Mollie has conducted a survey of consumers from (all in Dutch) the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, France and the UK who recently made an online purchase. The survey dives into the results to find out how European consumers shop, what they expect and how e-commerce businesses can capitalise on this.
E-commerce packaging
Macfarlane Packaging has revealed the results of its 9th annual unboxing survey, which encourages consumers across the UK to share their experiences and views on the packaging used by online retailers. The report highlights that 76% of consumers now expect online shopping deliveries to be sustainably packaged as standard (2023: 47%). In addition, returnable packaging could be a trend for online retailers to consider as 89% revealed that they are willing to return packaging to retailers for reuse. However, 61% said they would only do so if the retailer covers the cost of the return. This underlines the cost sensitivity of consumers in today’s market. Eunomia has published a report entitled ‘Delivering a More Sustainable Takeaway Packaging System’. The report outlines actionable policy, infrastructure, and financial solutions that key stakeholders can adopt to facilitate the transition to more sustainable packaging in the last-mile delivery sector. The report highlights multiple actions to optimise single-use packaging systems in the context of third-party delivery. You can download the report after filling in your details.
