Report: Mandatory indication of the country of origin or place of provenance for meat used as an ingredient
In December 2013 the European Commission published a report on mandatory indication of the country of origin for meat used as an ingredient. This report will be the starting point for discussion with EU Member States and the European Parliament. It weighs up the need for the consumer to be informed and the feasibility of introducing mandatory origin labelling. A cost/benefit analysis is included as well.
According to Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, the indication of origin is mandatory for beef and beef products, as well as for prepacked unprocessed meat of swine, poultry, sheep and goats (Article 26 (2)(b)) (Health & Consumer Voice, December 2013).
