Council and Parliament agree on new EU waste package
The Council and the Parliament have reached a provisional agreement on all 4 legislative proposals (including the packaging waste directive) of the EU waste package. One of the key elements of the agreed text is new binding targets for waste reduction to be met by 2025 and 2030, and 2035, including specific targets for various packaging materials. Minimum requirements for extended producer responsibility schemes (EPRs) are also included. Producers under these schemes are responsible for the collection of used goods, sorting and treatment for their recycling. Producers will be required to pay a financial contribution for that purpose (Press Release European Council, 18 December 2017).
