ProgRESS project: Development of organic barrier material based on PHA for paper and cardboard packaging
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) can be manufactured in a natural process by microbial fermentation of fatty acids. PHAs are polyesters and have thermoplastic properties. They are insoluble in water.
The objective of the ProgRESS project is to develop a PHA barrier material for paper and carton based packaging. The PHAs will be manufactured from carbohydrate-containing wastewater from the paper industry. The resulting PHAs will be optimized as a thermoplastic material and dispersion coating. A further key aspect of the project is to recycle the used packaging materials. The desired end-of-life option is to feed the material back into the PHA manufacturing process (News Item Fraunhofer IVV).
