Developments in logistics
According to ING (in Dutch), for Dutch machine manufacturing the year 2024 will be a transition year to growth in 2025 due to lower interest rates and accelerating international economic growth. Innovation in machine manufacturing focuses on a modular (configure-to-order) production strategy, further digitalisation and productivity-enhancing technology.
According a report (1.17 MB) by Forescout, connected Internet of Things (IoT) devices will expand to over 25 billion by 2028. Yet, connected devices are raising the stakes for assessing risk and managing cybersecurity. They have significantly expanded the attack surface creating new challenges and vulnerabilities.

Artificial intelligence in logistics
The new Logistics Trend Radar by DHL shows emerging AI trends and sustainable solutions. The relevance of AI for the logistics industry has expanded significantly, as reflected in this edition, which highlights five prominent trends: Generative AI, AI Ethics, Audio AI, Computer Vision and Advanced Analytics.
AI is important for the packaging and processing industry and its potential is revealed as the range of possible solutions expands. According to SAS, China leads the world in GenAI usage while US leads in full implementation. Leaders note lack of understanding, business strategy, sufficient data and regulation preparedness as concerns. Sustainability in the supply chain
Jönköping University has published a master thesis (956 kB) entitled; ‘Identification of environmental risks in the sustainable supply chain in the packaging of detergent products’. The research identifies practical risks, factors affecting supply chain sustainability risks from an environmental point of view and strategies for managing these risks.
Lund University has published a study (6.34 MB) on sustainable industrial packaging, elevating supply chain circularity and business competitiveness. This thesis contributes to the understanding of the impacts of sustainable industrial packaging by discussing the importance of integrating such decisions within the supply chain context. Also, it explores the opportunities that can emerge from sustainability-oriented innovations in packaging logistics and how these innovations can increase business competitiveness.
Henan Polytechnic University has published a study (258 kB) in the International Journal of Computer Science and Information Technology entitled; ‘Reverse logistics network optimization of express packaging boxes in colleges and universities based on the background of green logistics’.
The University of Twente has published a master thesis (2.21 MB) about the transitioning to a counter-based maintenance strategy at the packaging filling lines of Heineken. Currently, the time-based approach leads to inconsistent maintenance intervals. With expected decreases in total production, the company demands an adaptive strategy, which schedules maintenance based on actual machine usage; counter based maintenance.
