Research: Roll-to-roll printed nanophotonic sensors for food safety applications
European consortium, PHOTOSENS, has developed mass-producible polymer-based nanophotonic sensors for air quality, pharmaceutical process cleanliness and food safety applications. Roll-to-roll mass manufacturing is one of the key technologies in low cost disposable photonic sensor production. The 3-year project aimed for a disposable, mass-producible sensor chip.
“The combination of smart sensing layers and the nanophotonic sensing principle performed in mass manufacturable plastic chips opens the possibility for inexpensive disposable gas sensing elements”, explains Arjen Boersma, TNO, one of the project partners (Press Release VTT Technical Research Centre, 26 February 2014).
