NL: Study on the performance of the deposit-refund system

01 September 2015

Students at Utrecht University in the Netherlands studied the performance of the Dutch deposit-refund system (DRS). They assessed the DRS on failures and presented opportunities for improvement. The research consists of two phases in which first the state of the DRS is outlined and second a country analysis is conducted providing examples for improvement of the Dutch DRS.
They concluded that the Dutch DRS achieves a high collection percentage of PET bottles (95%), nevertheless the system has its shortcomings. The identified system failure clusters are lack of development, the unequal distribution of costs and efforts and lack of efficiency and cost effectiveness.
