NL: Environmental Secretary unveils plan to achieve circular economy
The Dutch State Secretary of Infrastructure and Environment Mansveld has sent a letter to the Tweede Kamer (the House of Representatives), including a plan with actions necessary for a circular or recycling-based economy.
She said that the average Dutch household throws away 5 kilograms of unsorted waste each week and that through consumer education and other initiatives that amount could be reduced substantially. The goal is to divert 75% of household and commercial waste by 2020.
The plan calls for households and businesses to increase their separation of waste, an effort that will need to be orchestrated at the municipal level (Recycling Laws International, 31 January 2014).
