NL: Packaging Waste Contribution also for foreign web shops

27 February 2018

Companies that put packaged products on the market are legally required to take care of the collection and recycling of the packaging: this is called extended producer responsibility. In real terms, this is done by paying Packaging Waste Management Contribution to the Netherlands Packaging Waste Fund. Since 1 January 2018 web shops based in countries outside the Netherlands are also required to pay the Packaging Waste Management Contribution if they supply their products to consumers in the Netherlands.
Companies (including web shops) should pay the contribution if they put more than 50,000 kilograms of packaging per year on the Dutch market (News Item Thuiswinkel.org, 2 February 2018).
