Calculating environmental footprint can be done much simpler

04 April 2018

How do you calculate the environmental damage caused by a product? Which are the factors that you should take into account and which are not? Hundreds of indicators have been developed for calculating an environmental footprint. But are all of them necessary? ‘It can be done in a much simpler way,’ says scientist Zoran Steinmann.
A set of four relatively simple indicators - for energy, land, water and materials, respectively -turns out to be sufficient. In the case study in which the damage to biodiversity and public health is investigated, Steinmann shows that more than 90% of the variance in the damage can be explained by the four indicators (News Item Radboud University, 22 March 2018).
