Israel: Minister to propose law banning free plastic bags at supermarkets

30 June 2014

The Israel Environmental Protection Minister is going to submit a bill that will prohibit supermarket chains from making plastic bags available for free. More than 70% of the public supports the banning of free plastic bag distribution. Under the proposed law, consumers will have to pay a minimum of 60 agorot per bag. The money will go to the Maintenance of Cleanliness Fund, and will be used to establish recycling and waste treatment facilities, environmental education, and more. Before the ban goes into effect, supermarkets will distribute multi-use baskets to the public for free, for a limited time period (News Item Israel Ministry of Environmental Protection, 28 May 2014).
