ISO: Graphical symbols for handling and storage of packages

21 January 2016

Packages are often marked with handling instructions in a certain language. However this is of little value for goods going to/through countries using a different language and of no value at all for illiterates. Graphical symbols offer the best possibility of conveying the consignor's intention.
Recently NEN-EN-ISO 780 (fifth edition) was published, specifying a set of graphical symbols conventionally used for the marking of distribution packages in their physical distribution chain to convey handling instructions. Examples of the symbols are the wine glass for ‘fragile, handle with care’ and the umbrella for ‘keep away from rain’ (World Packaging Standardisation Newsletter, January 2016).
