India: barcoding on mono cartons now optional for exporters
The Union commerce ministry has amended its earlier notification dated April 1, 2015 to make barcoding on mono cartons optional till further notification. Printing of details on primary level packaging has also been made optional till further orders from the ministry.
According to the latest notification issued by the Director General of Foreign Trade, the manufacturer or exporter of drug formulations will print the barcode as per GS1 Global Standard at different packaging levels to facilitate tracking and tracing. The notification further states the manufacturer or exporter shall maintain the data in the parent-child relationship for three levels of packaging (Pharmabiz.com, 23 May 2015).
