‘Platooning’ robots find their way through crowds
Robots can navigate efficiently through crowds of people by cleverly alternating between independent and cooperative behaviour, and in such a way that they disturb the people around them as little as possible. These findings (1.52 MB) were shared recently by TU Darmstadt and the University of Sheffield. Three behavioural strategies were tested: the independent strategy (each robot independently makes its way through the crowd), the cooperative strategy (robots form a line and follow the robot in the front) and the adaptive strategy (robots switch autonomously between the first two strategies depending on the situation).

Better balance between tech and human skills needed
A study (infographic, 259 kB) by Deloitte zeroes in on what many employees are looking for in corporate learning and development opportunities — and where organisations might be missing the mark. The survey found that while 87% of workers see human skills like adaptability, and communications as key to their career advancement, only around half think their company values employees with “human” skills more than those with technical skills.

Ethical technology standards: today’s organisational practices
Concerns about the risks of misuse of Generative AI (GenAI) remain top of mind, according to the third annual report (9.09 MB) on the State of Ethics and Trust in Technology by Deloitte. Among the over 1,800 professionals surveyed, 46% of individuals believe cognitive technologies have the potential to create the most social good when used responsibly. However, over half of respondents also said that cognitive technologies like GenAI present the most severe ethical risks compared to other emerging technologies.
