Philippines: Mandatory posting of notice of packaging dates on food products pushed
House Bill 1823 is pushing retail food stores that offer fresh or processed meats, poultry or seafood to post a sign clearly visible to consumers. The sign has to be printed with legible lettering and has to be three-fourths of an inch boldface type.
The notice is intended to bear the right of consumers to know where and when a given food product was cut and packed, to give information on store practices in relation to the date marked on the product and to list the assistance the store will provide relating to any questions on the product. The bill provides punitive measures for violators, ranging from €80 to €800 (Philippines House of Representatives Press Release, 9 March 2014).
