Europe: EC Committee recommends changes to proposed plastic carrier bags regulations
The European Commission’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy has published a draft opinion on the proposed EU Plastic Carrier Bags Directive. The Commission proposed amending Directive 94/62/EC on Packaging and Packaging Waste to include provisions to reduce plastic bag consumption.
Among the changes are separate deadlines for reducing lightweight plastic bags and very lightweight plastic bags. The Committee defines very lightweight plastic bags as bags made of plastic materials with a wall thickness between 1 and 10 microns and which are supplied to consumers at the point of sale of goods or products (Recycling Laws International, 14 February 2014).
