EU: Plans to reduce amount of plastic bags adopted by Council
The Position of the European Council at first reading with a view to the adoption of a directive amending Directive 94/62/EC as regards reducing the consumption of lightweight plastic carrier bags was adopted by the Council on 2 March 2015.
The measures taken by Member States shall include either or both of the following: (a) the adoption of measures ensuring that the annual consumption level does not exceed 90 bags per person by 31-12-2019 and 40 per person by 31-12-2025, or equivalent targets set in weight (b) the adoption of instruments ensuring that, by 31-12-2018, bags are not provided free of charge at the point of sale, unless equally effective instruments are implemented.
