EU Parliament Committee considers Plastic Waste Regulations

01 October 2013

The Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee of the EU Parliament is considering a proposal for a resolution that would create EU plastic waste legislation. The proposal follows the publication in March of a 20-page green paper on the same subject by the European Commission.
The proposal contains 11 recommendations, including a minimum 75% plastics recycling target achieved by 2020 and a phase out by 2020 of “the most dangerous plastics” including micro- and oxo-biodegradable plastics and plastics containing heavy metals.
The proposal will likely be revised as it winds through the legislative process. A first reading of the proposed legislation is expected for a Parliament Plenary session in December (Recycling Laws International, 27 September 2013).
