EU: MEPs push for mandatory "made-in" labelling to tighten up product safety rules

“Made-in” labelling should be made mandatory for non-food products sold on the single market, EU Parliament said. This plan should tighten up product safety requirements and market surveillance rules so as to strengthen consumer protection in the EU.
The labelling would apply to almost all non-food products, with exception of pharmaceutical products. EU manufacturers would be able to choose whether to put “made in EU” on the label or name their country. Both reports filed by Parliament’s rapporteurs on food safety and market surveillance were approved. The new Parliament will take up this outcome to negotiate with EU member states (European Parliament News Release, 15 April 2014).
