EU: Extending the storage time of eggs at home or at retail increases Salmonella food poisoning risks

09 September 2014

A recent study conducted by the European Food and Safety Authority (EFSA) on the extension of sell-by dates and best-before dates on eggs eaten on their own or as ingredient in foods concludes that this extension would negatively affect public health as the amount of Salmonella Enteritidis bacteria might increase.
Providing information on the meaning of the date labelling on eggs could counter consumer confusion and the resulting food waste at home. The sell-by date is the last date shops are supposed to display eggs for sale; the best-before date is the period in which the eggs maintain their best quality, for example their texture and flavour (News Release EFSA, 31 July 2014).
