ECHA RAC: Titanium dioxide possibly carcinogenic when inhaled
ECHA’s Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) concluded that the available scientific evidence meets the criteria in the CLP Regulation to classify titanium dioxide as a substance suspected of causing cancer through the inhalation route.
Titanium dioxide is very widely used in industrial/professional settings. Products/articles in which titanium dioxide is incorporated include paints, varnishes, inks, coatings, plastics, papers, adhesives, glassware, ceramics, food additives (E 171), pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, etc. The uses of TiO2 depend on its properties that are determined by the crystallinity, the size, the shape and surface chemistry of the TiO2 particle (ECHA Weekly, 18 October 2017).
