CZ: Fee on single-use plastic bags as of 2018

24 August 2016

Beginning on 1 January 2018, retailers in the Czech Republic will be required to charge one koruna (CZK 1) for each light-weight (less than 50 mils thick) single-use plastic bag distributed to customers. The requirement follows approval of an amendment (Bill 447/16) to the Czech Packaging Act. Biodegradable and compostable plastic bags will be permitted but must be appropriately labeled. The Ministry of Environment will prepare regulations on biodegradable plastic bags.
The amendment brings the Czech Republic into compliance with Directive (EU) 2015/720 that requires EU Member States to reduce single-use plastic bag consumption (Recycling Laws International, 28 June 2016).
