Canada: California lawmakers reject sugar drink health warning labels
Although Bill SB1000 on safety warnings for sugar-sweetened beverages passed the Senate in May 2014, it now did not pass out of Committee. The bill proposed that sodas, energy and fruit drinks that contain added sugar and 75 calories or more per 12 fl. oz. should bear a label reading ‘State of California Safety Warning: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes and tooth decay’.
The bill was developed by public health advocates using cigarette and alcohol warnings as a model. Representatives of the beverage industry argued that the bill was unfair by not applying to other foods and drinks (FoodIngredientsFirst News Release, 19 June 2014).
