Canada: California state senator introduces genetically engineered food labelling bill SB 1381
At the heart of SB1381, the Californian Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act, is a requirement for companies to disclose if foods sold in California are “genetically engineered” (for raw agricultural commodities) or “Produced with Genetic Engineering“ or “Partially Produced with Genetic Engineering” (for processed foods). It excludes certified organic foods, food served in restaurants, and meat and dairy from animals fed genetically engineered feed. SB1381 is an amended version of Proposition 37, a Mandatory Labelling of Genetically Engineered Food Initiative that was rejected by Californians in November 2012 (News Release Homepage Senator Noreen Evans, 24 April 2014).
