Brazil: Senate Committee approves tax incentive for products that use recycled materials
The Brazilian Senate Committee for the Environment, Consumer Protection and Surveillance and Control (CMA) has approved a bill to reduce the Tax on Industrialized Products (IPI) on products that use recycled plastic, paper, cardboard and other cellulosic fibers.
The initial version of the bill provided tax incentives only for products using recycled plastic. The bill was amended to add other recycled materials. In announcing committee approval of the bill, the CMA Chairman pointed out that the credit for using recycled plastic would not apply to companies making disposable plastic bags. The tax credit would take affect the law day it is gazetted (Recycling Laws International, 18 October 2013).
