Antimicrobial edible chitosan films with pistachio plant extracts

30 January 2018

Researchers at Aksaray University in Turkey used methanol extracts of stem, leaf, and seed obtained from pistachio (Pistacia terebinthus) which are rich in phenolic compounds to produce chitosan-based antioxidative and antimicrobial films. As was expected, incorporation of the plant extracts into chitosan films enhanced the antioxidant and antimicrobial activities effectively.
Also, the elasticity of chitosan-seed and chitosan-stem films was improved. The results show that the produced blend films could be suggested as a suitable alternative to synthetic plastics for applications in the food coating and packaging industry. An article about the research is published in RSC Advances.
