Finalist De Gouden Noot 2024 Mono-PE coffee bag, in-line surface-printed with oxygen barrier coating, designed for smooth deinking

Mono-PE coffee bag, in-line surface-printed with oxygen barrier coating, designed for smooth deinking by Siegwerk Druckfarben AG & Co. KGaA

Siegwerk’s innovation advances the transition from multi- to mono-material flexible packaging, which is essential for its recyclability. This solution utilizes Siegwerk's functional coating portfolio along with DG Press' DG AUXO web-offset press to optimize the overall environmental footprint of the production process, maintain the functionality of the packaging and ensure that the recyclates produced from the full-PE laminate can be utilized for high-value film segments via deinking.

The innovative packaging design effectively meets all key challenges of modern coffee packaging. The packaging uses an MDO-PE/PE laminate as basis for recyclability. Siegwerk's CIRKIT OxyBar BC 1582 coating is added to ensure excellent grease, aroma and oxygen barrier properties, achieving OTR value of 1-5 g/m2/day, necessary for preserving the freshness of coffee. The addition of CIRKIT HeatGuard as overprint varnish (OPV) enhances the heat resistance of the film, facilitating high-speed FFS line operation. The inks are electron-beam cured, therefore not containing solvents and allowing application without the use of hot air dryers, thereby reducing the material and energy consumption. All layers can be applied in one pass.

Moreover, as the set-up allows utilizing the surface-side of the laminate, the pouch can be fully de-inked and de-coated under standard hot washing conditions to produce high-quality white recyclates from the pouch.
