Replacing Best Before date might lead to less household waste
Replace the expression ‘Best Before’ on non-perishable products like coffee, tea, rice and pasta by ‘Non-perishable’ and consumers will throw away considerably less food. This is the conclusion of experts from Wageningen University & Research after consumer research.
The research is the first starting point in the Green Deal ‘Past the Date?’ (Over de Datum?), an agreement between Wageningen University & Research, government, producers and supermarkets through which they strive to prevent food waste in households. They strive for better understanding and use of expiration dates by consumer in order to prevent food waste (Wageningen University & Research, 27 March 2017).
