NL: Retailers observe strong decline in use plastic carrier bags

11 May 2017

Dutch retailers observe that consumers have adapted their behaviour since the introduction of the ban on giving away free plastic bags at points of sale. Shops hand out 71% less bags now that consumers have to pay for them. This is the result of research performed by SAMR. The majority of the retailers that were surveyed are positive about the ban because of its positive effects on the environment.
The research also shows that 3 out of 10 retailers now offer free paper bags to their customers. Their main reason for doing this is because they think it is more customer-friendly than asking money for a plastic bag (News Item Government of the Netherlands, 18 April 2017).
