Trends in packaging
A Smithers report highlights sustainability as a key trend in packaging design. Over the next decade, fibre-based materials are projected to grow significantly. At the same time, the increased availability of post-consumer recycled (PCR) resins will help plastics maintain a substantial market share. Global bio‑based polymer market 2024
According to a new nova report, the total production volume of bio‑based polymers was 4.2 million tonnes in 2024, which is 1% of the total production volume of fossil‑based polymers. The CAGR of bio-based polymers is, with 13%, significantly higher than the overall growth of the polymer market (2–3%) – this is expected to continue until 2029. Asia, the leading continent in 2024, has the largest production capacity in the world with 59%, with the largest capacities for PLA and PA. Global markets anti-counterfeiting packaging and sterile medical packaging
According to a recent report by Fortune Business Insights, the global market value for anti-counterfeiting packaging market is expected to rise from $159.87 billion in 2024 to $294.71 billion by 2032. You can find more information in the report summary. According to another report by Fortune Business Insights, the global market value for sterile medical packaging will reach $55.02 billion in 2025. The market is expected to grow with a CAGR of 7.48% to reach $91.13 billion in 2032. You can find more information in the report summary.

Packaging design and consumer behaviour
A UiTM study (3.51 MB) published in Behavioral Sciences, provides insights into how consumers make purchase decisions based on visual elements of packaging. The study examines the complex relationship between colour, graphics, logo, typography and layout.
A UNICAMP study (4.95 MB) entitled ‘Packaging colour and consumer expectations: Insights from specialty coffee’ is published in Food Research International.
University of Twente researchers studied how standardised, reusable packaging affects consumer perception in the FMCG market. They found that standardisation had a limited effect on perceived quality. A decrease in willingness to buy was observed in food products and an increase noted in non-food. Brand perception most often showed a decrease. The study (3.16 MB) is published in Sustainability.

Consumers and the environment
The Consumer Conditions Scoreboard 2025 (13.39 MB), published by the EC, shows a decline in trust in environmental claims between 2022 and 2024: only half of the EU respondents agreed that most environmental claims are reliable, a 6% reduction since 2022.
A Lodz University of Technology study (15.7 MB) published in Sustainability, assesses the influence of claims on food packaging suggesting the eco-friendly nature. The results confirm the positive impact on consumers’ purchase intentions and brand perception.
Prof. dr. Erica van Herpen wants to reduce waste: “Consumers throw away a lot of food and packaging without wanting to.” She was recently appointed as a personal professor at WUR.
