Lithuania plans container deposit scheme expansion

08 November 2013

The Lithuanian Ministry of Environment has proposed a bill to amend the Lithuanian Packaging and Packaging Waste Management Act to add plastic and metal containers to the country’s existing beverage container deposit scheme, which currently applies only to glass bottles.
The current scheme places a 25-cent deposit on glass bottles. According to the Ministry, 85-90% of covered glass bottles is being redeemed. The bill does not specify whether the same deposit value would be applied to plastic and metal containers. The Ministry expects the expansion to take effect in 2015. A public comment period is open through November 12 (Recycling Laws International, 1 November 2013).
