Characterization and optimization of odors in plastic recyclate
The use of secondary raw materials often fails not only due to unsatisfactory mechanical and processing properties but also due to the presence of odor-active substances. The relevant molecules and reaction pathways of these substances are being identified at Fraunhofer IVV.
New packaging legislation with higher recycling quotas is at the planning stage and consumers are becoming increasingly savvy about sustainability. Despite this, recyclates are only rarely used due to their inferior quality and undesired contaminants. Against this background, scientists are developing and optimizing recycling processes for mixed post-consumer plastic packaging waste (Fraunhofer Newsletter, nr. 1 2017).
