France introduces neutral packaging regulations for cigarettes

08 January 2016

A law has been passed in the French Parliament, which introduces plain packaging for cigarettes. The new rules will see neutral packaging for the tobacco products, which will come in uniform size and colour with the brand name in small font and uniform typeface. Logos for the brands are also to be removed from the packets.
The initiative intends to reduce the numbers of smokers, especially teenagers. The new packaging law for cigarettes will be put into effect from May next year. However, tobacco companies have voiced their protest against the regulations and have threatened to move ahead with legal action (News Item packaging-gateway.com, 27 November 2015).
