FI: Agreement voluntary reduction of single-use plastic bags

16 December 2016

The Minister of Agriculture and the Environment and the Managing Director of the Finnish Commerce Federation have signed a Green Deal on actions to restrict the use of plastic carrier bags. The agreement is in force for 10 years, and the aim is to make sure that Finland reaches the reduction targets for the plastic carrier bags in the EU Directive on packaging and packaging waste.
The reduction target concerns all plastic carrier bags in retail outlets, excluding very lightweight bags provided for loose food and when required for hygiene purposes. Companies are free to decide on the measures and how these are to be implemented (News Item Finnish Ministry of the Environment, 31 October 2016).
